Okay, so I finished this book a while ago, it is called Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Many of us are forced to read this in school. I, however, was not, so I read it on my own and finished it in a day. It's a pretty small book.
My first reaction to this book was confusion. I mean I knew what was going on, but I didn't. I didn't see the point of it. At the end, I kinda saw the point of the beginning, but not really. It was only when I reached the middle part that I somewhat understood the story.
But, nevertheless, there is a reason for why they make you read it in school: because it's a great book!
Summary:
Two guys, George and Lennie, are on their way for work at a farm. They are also running away from their old boss. They rest at a place. George tells Lennie that if something bad happens, to come to this place, and he would meet him here. Apparently Lennie, the dumber and bigger of the two, wanted to feel the fabric of the dress of a lady at their old working place, and they were "wanted".
At this new place, they didn't get along well with the son of the boss. The son of the boss also has a wife, who is acts like a very *friendly* person, but is longing for attention. The son likes to pick on Lennie.
They also met a guy with an old dog there. One day, one of their co-workers suggested that the dog be shot because it's old and useless. The owner of the dog finally agreed, but someone else shot the dog for him, and he was sad.
Like many workers on the farm, George and Lennie had a dream. They wanted to get enough money to get a house of their own. Lennie fantasized about the bunnies they will have in this fantasy home. The dog's owner also joined in in this dream. They would run away together when they have enough money.
But for now, Lennie needed a pet to pet. He always carried a mouse in his pocket, and he would pet it with his thumb, but he would always pet it too hard and it would die, and he would keep petting it.
One day, a worker's dog had puppies, and Lennie was allowed to pet them and look after them. Lennie was told not to take them away from their mom because they needed her milk. He agreed.
But one day while Lennie was caring for the puppies, one of them died. He was trying to hide it in the barn. He was sitting with it in his coat. Then the boss's son's wife came in. As you recall, she is a rather very *friendly* person. She sat on the straws with him and started talking to him. He was scared at first. He talked about how he liked to pet things, and that they were soft. The girl said that her hair was soft, and asked if Lennie would like to feel it. He said yes. He then grabbed her hair. The girl said he was hurting her, and to stop it. She started yelling, but Lennie just kept grabbing on to the hair, and he tried to shut her up by putting his big palm on her face, covering her nose and mouth. The girl died.
To find out what happens next, highlight the text below. This is to prevent spoilers for people who want to read the book!
Lennie remembers that place that George told him to meet him when bad things happen. He runs there. People soon discover the dead body of the girl, and they grab their shotguns and went after him. A worker reported that his shotgun was missing.
George went to their meeting place and told Lennie to look the other way. Lennie started telling George about the fantasy home they would have when they have enough money. George then shoots Lennie in the head.
The other guys hear the gunshot and come running. They see the dead Lennie, George, and the worker's missing gun.
Everyone thought that Lennie took the man's gun, wanted to shoot George, but that George fought back and got the gun and shot Lennie.
But boy, were they wrong!
Yeah, I know, it's confusing. You gotta read it for yourself though.
